In 1849 General Giuseppe Garibaldi, military leader of the revolutionaries who were fighting to unify Italy, took refuge in San Marino with about 2,000 soldiers to escape the armies of Austria and Rome. All found refuge in the territory of San Marino. The authorities managed to prevent the entry of the Austrian troops, giving the Garibaldians time to leave the territory without bloodshed.

Their Excellencies the Captains Regent accompanied by the Butler reach Palazzo Pubblico.
The following are waiting for them: the members of the State Congress, the Government Mayors, the resident Diplomatic Representatives, the Officers of the Higher Command of the Militias.

Departure of the Regency Procession directed to the monument of Giuseppe Garibaldi in the square of the same name.
The procession is opened by two Gendarmes. Followed by two Rocca Guards bearing a laurel crown with a blue-white ribbon with the inscription: "The Government of the Republic of San Marino". Followed by the Donzellis, the Captains Regent, the Butler, the members of the State Congress, the Diplomatic Representatives, the Officers. The procession is closed by a picket of Guardie di Rocca in full uniform.

The Captains Regent and the procession reach the monument to Garibaldi. The Guardie di Rocca place the laurel wreath at the foot of the monument and stand at attention at its sides. The Captains Regent approach the crown and lightly touch the ribbon. They therefore assume, very briefly, a position of recollection and then turn their backs to the monument, placing themselves on its left.
The Military Band performs parts of the Hymn to Garibaldi, the Italian national anthem and the San Marino national anthem.
