I Capolavori del Patrimonio Nascosto

Artworks from private collections

San Marino, from 6 December 2024, hosts an exhibition dedicated to a series of works of art from private collections

Curated by Giancarlo Graziani

The exhibition I Capolavori del Patrimonio Nascosto - Masterpieces of Hidden Heritage - Works of Art from Private Collections shines a spotlight on the privately owned artistic heritage that the State considers to be of exceptional importance for the Italian cultural heritage. This is the so-called “notified” heritage that, while remaining in private hands, is governed by certain rules that guarantee its protection.

On display at Palazzo SUMS, in Città di San Marino, from 6 December 2024 to 30 April 2025, is a corpus of works of exceptional value linked by the common thread of “notification”, works that, as private, have never been exhibited and, indeed, jealously guarded by their owners.

On display are fourteen paintings and sculptures, as well as a cycle of fourteen frescoes from the 15th and 16th centuries detached from the Palazzo Spreca Cycle in Viterbo, which span the most significant eras in the history of Italian art, from the early Renaissance to the Baroque up to 20th-century painting, by artists such as: Giacomo Balla, Vittore Belliniano, Michelangelo Buonarroti, Jusepe de Ribera, Agostino Di Duccio, Donatello, Vincenzo Giacomelli, Bartolomeo Montagna, Giorgio Morandi, Francesco Morone, Gino Severini, Mario Sironi, Gian Battista Tiepolo.

The exhibition itinerary unfolds in four rooms that collect the works according to a chronological criterion: in the first room you will find the works of the 20th century, in the second the oldest works of the Venetian school between the 15th and 16th centuries, in the third you can admire the Cycle of Virtues that furnished the noble rooms of Palazzo Spreca, in the fourth there is space for the Risorgimento works of the 19th century.

In each room there is a scent that wants to take the visitor back to the era to which it refers: incense in the room dedicated to the sacred works of ancient art, absinthe for the most recent works of the 20th century, citrus scents in the spaces that house the cycle of frescoes from Viterbo and the smell of tobacco in the room dedicated to the battles of the Risorgimento.

In addition to admiring absolute masterpieces, the visitor is invited to take a fascinating journey through the history of the private collections from which the works come. A unique opportunity to discover how these collections were formed, what criteria guided the choices of collectors and what events characterized their conservation.

The exhibition also aims to be a starting point for a new awareness of what is preserved in the notified Italian artistic heritage, which constitutes an invaluable resource for the entire community.
