Historica - a history of freedom: the program revealed

From 23 to 25 July 2021 in the Old Town of San Marino

San Marino, 21 July 2021 - The opening of the highlight of the San Marino summer is now very close: "Historica - A history of Freedom", the great multi-era reenactment that will accompany the public to discover the over 1700 years of San Marino history.

From Friday 23 to Sunday 25 July from 16.00 to 24.00, with completely free admission and in compliance with the anticovid regulations in force, the Old Town of San Marino will be transformed into a large open-air stage ready to welcome re-enactors and artists from San Marino and not.

Over 400 reenactors and artists will be involved in the three days of the event to give life to over 90 daily appointments that will range from itinerant shows in the streets and squares to historical re-enactment activities in the most fascinating and iconic places of the Old Town.

Six different historical areas in which visitors can admire, learn and discover the peculiarities of the different eras and the most interesting anecdotes on San Marino history. From one square to another, visitors will enter real Living History paintings, that is living history in which they will be invited to actively participate as protagonists and not mere spectators. How were the wounded treated after a Napoleonic battle or during the Great War? You can discover it respectively in Piazza Sant’Agata, thanks to the setting up of a historic ambulance, or at Campo Bruno Reffi where you can visit a field hospital of the time. Also in Campo Bruno Reffi you can find yourself involved in an air alarm and in the tumult of an allied military camp of World War II.

How did the Gladiators of Ancient Rome fight? In Piazza Domus Plebis you can literally almost "touch it" just as at the First Tower you will learn about the games, entertainment and cuisine of the fifteenth century or at the Piano dei Mortai you can admire the precision of those who, in the Middle Ages, made up of Archery a skill of all excellence. Without forgetting the seventeenth-century military art, including Spades and Mosquets in the gardens of Via Donna Felicissima, or the boldness of the Risorgimento troops, gathered around Giuseppe Garibaldi at the Ara dei Volontari and engaged in military training and skirmishes.

And there is also the “Fiera del Tempo” in via Eugippo, to accompany the public on their trip to San Marino: a large market dedicated to historical, artisanal and traditional products.

Past and history to be savored also in the many restaurants in the Old Town which on the occasion of the event will offer themed menus and dishes to rediscover distant or forgotten flavors.

Instead, the "Time Machine" area in via Gino Zani will be looking fully towards the future, where, thanks to the most modern technologies, it will be possible to enter history. Thanks to the official App of the event (Historica San Marino on the AppStore and GoogleStore), the public will be able to experience the thrill of going for a real interactive journey through time and what better way to do it than the iconic DeLorean of the film "Return to the Future "?

Finally, there will be animations and shows that will be the corollary to the great journey through time created for this first edition of Historica. And so, walking through the evocative streets of the city, you can come across jesters, musicians, flag-wavers, acrobats, barkers, waders and actors ready to involve and amaze the public, ranging from medieval to baroque suggestions up to those of the early 1900s.

A program full of varied proposals that will culminate every evening in the Cava dei Balestrieri, a symbol of the Republic, with great evening shows.
Friday 23 starting at 21.00 will be the time of Historiae Sancti Marini, a journey into the San Marino tradition entrusted to the performances of the San Marino Crossbowmen Federation and of the Cerna dei Lunghi Archi. A journey to discover ancient traditions that have their origins in the Middle Ages and which still live in San Marino today. From crossbow pole shooting trials to the art of the flag to the evocative story of the defense of the city by the Cerne.

On Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th, again from 21.00, the Cava dei Balestrieri will host the show “A History of Freedom”, a journey through the main stages of the history of San Marino told through historical re-enactment, show and entertainment. A continuous succession of proposals and emotions that will accompany the public until the great final show "Libertas - Hymn to Freedom", an original creation suspended between heaven and earth thanks to dancers, waders and aerial acrobats who will give voice and shape to that idea of freedom that is the basis of San Marino history.

"It will be a story to be lived", these are the words of the organizers who promise to give the thrill of an unforgettable journey through time.
