The twenty-fourth UNWTO General Assembly pays tribute to Mauro Maiani with a minute of silence, a long applause and a commemorative plaque.

The San Marino delegation, represented by the Minister Federico Pedini Amati and the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Spain Luca Brandi, intervened this morning at the beginning or the works. Focus on the future of post-Covid-19 tourism, with particular attention to environmental sustainability and digitalisation processes.

San Marino, 01 December 2021/1721 d.F.R. - Minister of Tourism, Posts, Cooperation and Expo Federico Pedini Amati’s mission to Madrid began today, to take part in the 24th General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization - UNWTO, scheduled until 3 December in the Spanish capital. Several important decisions are expected from the delegations of the 159 State Members and from the more than 480 organizations representing the private sector, in particular on the future of world tourism, the post-Covid-19 recovery and the challenge posed by the spread of the Omicron variant, the importance of innovation, education and rural development, together with the urgent need to transform the sector following the criteria of sustainability and environmental protection, without however jeopardizing its growth, which is fundamental for the stability of the world economy and international trade.

Precisely in the inaugural works of the Assembly, the Republic of San Marino was the protagonist of a prestigious and moving ceremony in memory of Ambassador Mauro Maiani, former representative of San Marino within the UNWTO. Secretary General Zurab Pololikashvili recalled the Ambassador in his opening speech and handed a commemorative plaque to Minister Federico Pedini Amati. The long applause of the whole Assembly was significant, as proof of the important diplomatic work carried out in this body over the years.

Minister Federico Pedini Amati, head of the San Marino delegation composed for the occasion by the Chief of Cabinet of Tourism Luca Lazzari and the Ambassador of the Republic of San Marino to the Kingdom of Spain Luca Brandi, intervened in the following debate, thanking the entire Assembly for this important recognition that "honors the memory of a diplomat of absolute value and indisputable culture, experience and charisma".

The World Tourism Organization will continue its work today in the afternoon and for the whole day tomorrow, proceeding with the appointment of the new Secretary General and the members of the Regional Offices, the themes and activities to be put in place for the World Tourism Day for the next two years and ultimately deciding the location of the next General Assembly.
