Giornate Medioevali – 1463 Terra Sancti Marini

The main event of the San Marino summer is back, from 27 to 30 July 2023

1463 - Terra Sancti Marini is the characterizing theme of the 26th edition of Giornate Medioevali, the flagship event of the 2023 summer of the Republic of San Marino.
The title links the event to one of the key dates in the history of San Marino: 27 June 1463, the day on which Pope Pius II Piccolomini issues the Comunitati et hominibus Terrae Sancti Marini Bill which leads San Marino to double its surface area, reaching an extension that will not undergo substantial border changes in the following centuries, giving San Marino its current conformation and geographical extent.

Visitors will be guided on a journey into the 15th century and in particular through the peculiarities of the Land of San Marino, giving the public a vision of a place where, after long periods of wars and struggles, peace returns, civil life made up of markets, commercial traffic, fairs and festivals that give back to the community a daily life made up of social life and community.

The San Marino of the 15th century will be told through different and complementary tools ranging from historical re-enactment to live entertainment, from teaching to experientiality, from edutainment to gaming. An approach which, in addition to entertainment, will be able to find the in-depth study and cultural enrichment typical of historical re-enactment thanks to the narration and representation of living history, curated by historical groups mostly from San Marino but also Italian, selected by Trends, the organizing agency, among those adhering to the CERS - European Consortium for Historical Re-enactments and CIANS - Italian Committee of National Historical Associations.

Every evening the entire Old Town center of San Marino and the main stage Cava dei Balestrieri will be filled with ever-changing shows: from the ancient art of the drum and the flag to performances by jesters, fire-breathers, musicians, falconers, dancers and stilt walkers to culminate, on Sunday evening, with the traditional Palio del Tricorniolo.

The journey in San Marino’s Old Town will be a continuous alternation of amazement and emotions thanks to the continuous possibility of experiencing a relationship with such a fascinating and distant historical era in an immersive way. The re-enactment itinerary will alternate in the main squares and streets of the Old Town with artists and shows ranging from performing arts to music, from puppet to physical theatre, from itinerant performances to large fixed shows.

The event is sponsored by the Ministry of Tourism and it is organized by the Trends Agency with the collaboration of the San Marino Tourism Board.
