Medieval Days 2025: a record-breaking edition combining history, entertainment and passion

.

The 28th edition of the Medieval Days of the Republic of San Marino, which enlivened the Historic Centre from 25 to 27 July, ended on a very positive note, offering the public days of excitement, culture and great popular participation.
From the official opening on Friday 25 July in Piazza della Libertà, preceded by the traditional reading of the proclamation in the districts, a medieval atmosphere enveloped Mount Titano. Every evening, starting at 18.00, the squares and streets of the Historic Centre were transported back in time with camps, craft shops, travelling shows, jesters, musicians and costume parades.

The success can be seen in the numbers, despite the bad weather on Saturday: 30,895 people arrived in San Marino over the three days, significantly exceeding the 23,970 in 2024, reaching +28.89%, and even the 30,702 in 2023, with an increase of +0.63%, despite the 2023 edition lasting one day longer. The Borgo Maggiore - Historic Centre cable car also recorded record numbers, with 16,566 passengers, up from the previous two years, marking a +10.84% increase compared to 2024 and +13.97% compared to 2023.

The historic centre of San Marino has been transformed into an authentic medieval village, welcoming visitors with an evocative itinerary featuring shops, encampments, travelling shows and costumed parades. The 2025 edition confirmed the active and enthusiastic participation of the San Marino Historical Groups, led by the San Marino Crossbowmen's Federation, the Corte di Olnano and the Compagnia dell'Istrice, the Cerna dei Lunghi Archi, the Barattieri - San Marino Historical Games Association, the Compagnia della Forca - Bradipoteater, the San Marino Arts and Crafts Group, as well as guest companies from Italy and Europe.

More than 300 re-enactors every evening, 650 on Sunday. The historic centre was brought to life by more than 300 re-enactors every evening, with a peak of 650 people on Sunday 27 July, whose performance schedule was redesigned at the last minute due to bad weather on Saturday and in which the shows and performances took place from the early hours of the morning: artists, performers, musicians, archers and flag throwers made the day even richer and more exciting.

The Medieval Days attracted visitors of all ages, thanks to a varied and immersive programme designed for everyone. The areas dedicated to children were particularly popular, such as the Giardino dei Liburni and Piazza della Libertà with their medieval carousel and games of skill for young and old alike, while La Taverna del Falco offered its guests a gastronomic experience through the unique aromas and flavours of the Middle Ages.

Among the highlights were the Torneo della Libertà (Tournament of Freedom) with archers from all over Italy and the Disfida del Tricorniolo (Tricorniolo Challenge), a crossbow shooting competition between the cities of Lucca, Massa Marittima, Pisa, Volterra, Sansepolcro and San Marino, won by a crossbowman from San Marino.

Thanks to the entire organisation curated by MAD S.r.l with the Artistic Direction of Giuseppe Del Barna, in collaboration with the Uebba agency for graphics and communication, to the Sammarinese Historical Groups, to the companies from all over Italy and Europe, to the artists, and to all the staff involved. This year more than ever, the event proved its ability to combine historical accuracy, entertainment and engagement: a winning mix that strengthens the bond between the territory and the visitors, and confirms the event as a symbol of San Marino's cultural summer. Work on the next edition has already begun, with the aim of making the Medieval Days an increasingly important part of San Marino's cultural tourism and an unforgettable experience for everyone.
