The guide “In the Footsteps of Saint Marinus – Peregrinatio Marini” presented
A spiritual journey through San Marino and the places of faith and tradition linked to his legend
The guide “In the Footsteps of Saint Marinus – Peregrinatio Marini” has been officially presented: a spiritual journey through San Marino and the places of faith and tradition connected to his legend. It represents a valuable strategic tool for enhancing Sammarinese identity and promoting spiritual tourism.
This morning, at the Ministry of Tourism, a press conference was held to present the guide “In the Footsteps of Saint Marinus – Peregrinatio Marini”, a valuable operational and cultural resource for pilgrims, tourists, and citizens of San Marino.
It is the latest chronological milestone of a remarkable project launched on 20 April 2023, with the inauguration of the Saint Marinus Walk—an essential stage of the strategic program aimed at promoting the Republic of San Marino as a destination for spiritual tourism. Since April 2024, the route has been included in the Italian Catalogue of Religious Walks.
The initiative, carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Territory, and in synergy with the Diocese of San Marino–Montefeltro, outlines a structured itinerary of approximately 80 km stretching from Rimini to Pennabilli, with an ideal starting point in Rab, the homeland of Saint Marinus. Divided into four stages, the route is designed to be walked on foot or, in some sections, cycled, following in the footsteps of the Founder Saint. Firmly grounded in identity, spirituality, and history, with a strong international vision, the route crosses three States: Croatia, Italy, and the Republic of San Marino.
In its essence, the journey celebrates profound and meaningful values, foremost among them Peace and Freedom as tools of dialogue and cultural exchange—values that have always been central to the Republic of San Marino.
With the Saint Marinus Walk, not only is a path of faith celebrated, but also a message of hope and education toward peace and freedom, which find in tourism one of their most powerful forms of expression.
Over time, a shared governance model has been established (Memorandum of Understanding with the Diocese and a coordination committee) to foster and fully implement spiritual tourism. Among the most significant milestones of this journey is the inclusion last February of the Saint Marinus Walk in the section dedicated to the Jubilee Routes 2025, granting it further ecclesiastical recognition and international visibility.
The guide, available in Italian and English, is the result of the valuable and fruitful collaboration of a team of experts and enthusiasts. Texts are edited by Mother Sister Maria Gloria Riva, the naturalistic stages are illustrated by Andrea Severi, and the photographs are kindly provided by the San Marino Tourism Board. It represents a collective work, created with expertise and passion, aimed at those seeking not only fine cuisine and places of rest, but also moments of silence and reflection, as well as a travel diary rich in notes, information, and inspiration. The project has always been supported with dedication and passion by Francesco Maria Ugolini, Councillor of the Republic of San Marino and Pilgrim Ambassador of the Republic.
