Michelangelo Architect. The Drawings of Casa Buonarroti
From 22 December 2022 to 14 May 2023
The Republic of San Marino, home of the architect Giovan Battista Belluzzi (1506-1554) known as the «Sanmarino», one of the protagonists of the Italian military Renaissance, presents the Michelangelo Architetto exhibition. The drawings of Casa Buonarroti, which from 22 December 2022 to 14 May 2023, will make possible to retrace the creative process of Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564) in one of the fields that most characterized his artistic activity, architecture.
Thanks to the most important collection in the world dedicated precisely to this theme, the corpus of 130 autograph sheets conserved by Casa Buonarroti in Florence, it will in fact be possible to admire a selection of drawings of great architectural works signed by Michelangelo himself, thus retracing the different moments in which the Tuscan artist dealt with architecture: from the competition for the arrangement of the drum of the dome of Santa Maria del Fiore to the facade of San Lorenzo in Florence, from the New Sacristy of the same church to the Laurentian Library, from the fortifications for the defense of republican Florence to the church of San Giovanni dei Fiorentini in Rome, which remained in the planning stage, to reach the factory of San Pietro, the Sforza Chapel in Santa Maria Maggiore and the Porta Pia, all in the future capital of Italy.
